A very tough game against a team sitting 2nd in their league and favourites to return to Step 4 this season. The Salts put up a resilient performance, never giving up and wearing the club shirt with pride and honour.

The first 15 minutes were all about the Salts, with several shots narrowly going over the bar. However, VCD Athletic took the lead in the 24th minute when Michael Fenn scored. A free kick passed through a crowded box and was smashed home off the bar from close range.

In the 28th minute, Ollie Freeman saw his shot fantastically saved by VCD keeper Dan O’Donovan. Shortly after, Nial Stillwell cleared a dangerous effort off the line, but that was the only other clear chance VCD had in the half. The score remained 1-0 at half-time.

In the second half, Kionte Gillfillian-Waul picked up a yellow card in the 61st minute. Just two minutes later, skipper Adam Green was also booked. On 66 minutes, the Salts made a double substitution, with Craig Dundas and Kionte Gillfillian-Waul coming off and Carl Oblitey and Luke Miller entering the fray.

The Salts then created a great move, but the shot frustratingly hit the side netting. As the game went on, VCD players began going down as if there was a sniper in the stands, clearly looking to waste time.

Nial Stillwell picked up the Salts’ third booking in the 81st minute. Despite pushing forward in the closing stages, the Salts just couldn’t find the finishing touch to force an equaliser.

It’s been a fantastic run in the FA Vase – our best for years – and the club is incredibly proud of the management and players, who have put in such a great shift this season. We’re sure the supporters appreciate the effort and dedication shown by the entire team.
