With three suspensions, including skipper Adam Green, and several injuries, a much-changed team took to the field against Sheerwater. The opening 15 minutes saw the Salts on the front foot, creating several early chances, though none found the back of the net. Craig Dundas controlled the midfield, and Epsom & Ewell looked promising.

However, disaster struck as the Salts conceded twice within four minutes, both from corners where they failed to get a challenge in. The first was a header back across the goal that was nodded in from close range on 17 minutes, and the second was a shot from outside the box on 21 minutes. Although Will Kendall nearly put the Salts back in the game with a header against the crossbar on 23 minutes, the score remained 0-2 at half-time.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Salts unable to convert their opportunities. Anthony Nazareth, who received a booking on 52 minutes, was replaced by Kionte Gillfillian-Wual. Luke Miller was then substituted at the 60th minute for new signing Michele Uche Maccari, who joined this week from Merstham.

Sheerwater’s keeper made a remarkable double save in the 72nd minute after a deflected shot, which could have turned the game for the Salts. Instead, Sheerwater extended their lead when former Salt Joel Onu was substituted, then scored after the Salts defence stopped appealing for offside. Further substitutions saw Will Kendall replaced up front by Jason Bloor, with Callum Wilson making way for Luke Taylor in the 92nd minute.

All in all, it was a disappointing day for the Salts, as they struggled to find their rhythm. They’ll need a stronger performance next week in the FA Vase at home against high-flying North Greenford.
