A little over two months ago we beat our opponents of yesterday, Colliers Wood United in what so far has been our best result of the season 5-1. Therefore, we travelled to their home ground with some optimism. After the previous result Colliers Wood changed their management and only one player was left from the defeated opposition on that day.
We had to make a few changes ourselves due to suspension and unavailability of a couple of players. We had the unfamiliar sight of our normal central midfielder, Rory Edwards filling in at right back, where he acquitted himself very well in this unfamiliar position. Our manager Steve Springett was also unavailable which gave a chance for Oli Thompson to return to the central defensive berth after sweeping a two-match ban.
What of the game? It was a match of very few chances. There were a few ‘could of’s, should of’s and maybe’s’ for both teams but in the end both halves’ finished scoreless so we took a point away from home and as we all know these types of performances do matter at the end of the season. We did have a claim for a legitimate goal towards the end of the game when it looked like we had scored a goal from a corner only for the opposition goalkeeper to scoop it back but video evidence after the game does show the ball crossing the line but the 3 officials that matter did not award the goal.
There was another incident in the first half worthy of note where Oli Thompson went down after a challenge from the Colliers Wood centre forward; we subsequently learnt that he had broken his nose and did not come out for the second half – we wish Oli for a speedy recovery.
We move on quickly to a Home game against Tadley Caleva on Tuesday evening at the Reg Madgwick stadium in Cobham and then we finish our pre-Christmas matches with a tough visit to Horley Town FC on Saturday 23rd December.
