On a bitterly cold and frosty night, the Salts delivered a woeful performance on the road. Having played so well on Saturday and already beaten Chipstead 2–0 at home earlier in the season, this was an incredibly disappointing outing.
The opening ten minutes showed some promise, with Luke Miller making several good runs down the left flank. However, his crosses failed to find their targets. Just before half-time, Chipstead came close when a long-range effort struck the upright, but the Salts managed to clear the danger. The score remained 0–0 at the break.
Five minutes into the second half, former Tooting player Elliott McKimm fired a low volley into the far post, giving Chipstead a 1–0 lead. The Salts attempted to respond, but their passing, so effective on Saturday, was completely absent.
In the 75th minute, substitute Enrique Tiamuna scored Chipstead’s second goal. The goal appeared to be miles offside, leaving the assistant referee red-faced as he was caught completely out of position. To make matters worse, the Salts were reduced to 10 men when Nicolas Bostan was sin-binned following an argument with the assistant referee about the offside decision.
A flurry of substitutions saw Sean Michael Anderson, Jason Bloor, Blessing Hombessa, and Jack Torbett enter the fray for the Salts. However, their impact was limited. Towards the end of the match, player-coach Craig Dundas picked up a booking for a foul in the box.
In the dying moments, the Salts managed a couple of speculative shots, both narrowly missing the target. It summed up a miserable evening for the team, whose performance fell far short of their usual standard.
