We returned to cup competition action last night at King George’s Field in the Combined Counties Premier Challenge Cup, as we hosted Hilltop FC, who play in the Northern section of our league. Unfortunately, only 40 spectators turned up on what proved to be a chilly autumn evening. However, those hardy souls were rewarded with a comfortable 4-1 victory, securing our place in the next round, which is expected to take place in three weeks’ time.

Reece Tierney returned to central defence, replacing the injured Stefan Aiwone, while Faebian Witter was given a chance in goal as we rotated our goalkeepers.

Hilltop started the match at a fast pace and were certainly on top in the early stages, moving the ball around confidently. To add to our early concerns, striker Carl Oblitey was forced off after a tackle and was replaced by Sean Michael Anderson. Despite this, we gradually grew into the game and took the lead in the 17th minute, with Ethan Nelson-Roberts capitalising on a defensive error to open the scoring. We doubled our advantage in the 31st minute, with Nelson-Roberts once again finding the net, heading home a cross from the right, past the helpless goalkeeper. Hilltop pulled one back shortly afterwards following a defensive mix-up, leaving us wondering if they might stage a comeback. However, Luke Miller dispelled any doubts just before half-time, picking his spot from the edge of the 18-yard box to make it 3-1 with an excellent finish.

HT: 3-1

We began the second half in much the same way, and it was no surprise when Luke Miller coolly slotted the ball into the net in the 52nd minute to make it 4-1. Both teams made several changes, and while both had opportunities to score, a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing kept the score unchanged. The match eventually petered out after a lengthy period of injury time, and we progressed comfortably with a 4-1 victory.

In summary, it was a solid performance, marred only by the goal we conceded to Hilltop. We now turn our attention back to league action, with two crucial games on the horizon. First, we host Horley Town this Saturday at 3 pm, followed by a midweek fixture against Balham at their temporary home at Tooting and Mitcham, with a 7:45 pm kick-off next Wednesday.
