A healthy crowd of just under 150 turned up as FA Cup Fever came to our new ground at King George’s Field on Saturday, 3rd August, as we took on higher division opponents, Phoenix Sports.
We were able to field a strong side, just missing one of our strikers, Carl Obiltey, who was named on the subs bench after recovering from a slight groin issue.
We were ‘slow out of the blocks’ at the start of the first half, which may have been down to us showing a bit too much respect to our opponents. There were very few chances created by either side in the first half, and only one of those from our opponents caused some panic in our defence, which resulted in our goalkeeper, Fabien Witter, making a good save. The half ended 0-0.
In the second half, the game was again bereft of clear-cut chances. However, we were very much in the ascendency and fashioned a couple of long-distance chances which just missed the uprights on both occasions. The game finished 0-0.
After this draw, we now face a replay at their ground in Bexleyheath this coming Tuesday at 7:45 pm; it should be another close encounter judging by the evidence shown in this game.
Our next fixture at home is the following Saturday with a 3 pm kick-off against Guildford City. If you cannot make it to Bexleyheath on Tuesday, why not come on down and see us open our league account next Saturday at St George’s Field.
