We played against Step 4 Sutton Common Rovers in our last pre-season friendly on Saturday, July 27th, in front of a rather sparse crowd, which was expected on a bright, warm, sunny afternoon.
Our team showed very few changes from our great win against Corinthian Casuals the previous Tuesday as our players gained more fitness before a huge FA Cup game next Saturday.
In the first half, we were more than a match for our higher-placed opponents, and each team had a good number of chances. We conceded a goal from a set-piece corner when their no. 6 of Sutton Common Rovers rose at the far post to head home; it was a goal that could have easily been avoided. Half Time: 0-1.
In the second half, we had the lion’s share of possession and looked solid in defence. We had a few chances before we eventually equalised through Will Kendall after a great cross from Luke Miller. His header at the far post gave the keeper no chance and was more than we deserved. We continued to press for the winner and could have and should have taken the lead on a couple of occasions. At the final whistle, the game finished 1-1. It was a good result for us and, more importantly, demonstrated that we should be a force to be reckoned with when the season begins.
Ahead of the league season, we play in the FA Cup next Saturday at home against Phoenix Sports, who are also at Step 4. There is no reason, after this display, why we should not give them a good game and hopefully progress to the next round. Why not come on down and support your local team at our new ground-sharing arrangement at St. George’s Field, our closest ground to Epsom and Ewell in a good few years. Kick-off is at 3 pm as we embark on our ‘Road to Wembley.’
