We played our new landlords, Corinthian Casuals, on Tuesday, 23rd July for the Stella Lamont Trophy, in memory of our former President who sadly passed away late last year. The match drew a healthy crowd, significantly boosted by our landlords’ support.
The match was kindly sponsored by “What’s on in Epsom”. In attendance were Ian Lamont (Stella’s son) and the Mayor and Mayoress of Epsom and Ewell.
Both teams fielded several unsigned players when the match began. The first half was evenly contested, with both sides creating good chances, but it ended goalless.
As is traditional in pre-season friendlies, there were several changes to personnel at the start of the second half or shortly thereafter. We were the better side during this period, creating several good chances to score. The ‘Casuals’ had only sporadic attacks into our half, as most of the game was played at their end of the pitch. Unfortunately, neither team was able to break the deadlock, leading to a penalty shootout to decide the winner of the trophy.
We scored our first three penalties, while our opponents missed their first, hitting the post. Our fourth penalty was blazed over the bar, resulting in a 3-3 tie when they scored their fourth penalty. We dispatched our fifth penalty into the roof of the net with aplomb, and the ‘Casuals’ fifth penalty taker missed over the bar. Thus, we won the trophy for the first time in three years. It was a deserved win, albeit on penalties, as we had the better chances over the 90 minutes. Well done to all involved.
Ian Lamont, along with the Mayor and Mayoress of Epsom and Ewell, presented the winners and runners-up with their medals and the coveted trophy.
The trophies were kindly sponsored by our committee member Mr Carl Boorer and his company Sence Design Build Ltd
