Home comforts, big support, and a tense penalty shoot-out were all things that were present at last Saturday’s playoff semi-final against Selsey. We won the right to be in this season’s playoff final after a dramatic finish at Fetcham Grove last week.

After Theobald’s leg sent us through to the final, we now look ahead at what could be for both clubs fighting to regain Step Five status.

Epsom

We look to return to step five after five seasons at step six. This would be our second attempt in the playoffs after last year’s defeat at the semi-final stage to eventual overall winners Midhurst & Easebourne.

A promotion win on our last outing at Fetcham Grove before our next move to Cobham FC’s Reg Madwick Stadium from next season. This would be a fitting end to our time ground-sharing with Leatherhead.

We come into this final with three wins and three draws in our last six, or four wins and two draws as we eventually beat Selsey after a 0-0 draw in the semi-final last week.

Wick

Wick are also looking to return to step five for the first time in five seasons after their relegation in the 2017/18 season.

They [Wick] have registered their highest league finish since the 2019/20 season when they finished 4th. They also come into this game with decent form, winning four of their six, which also includes a draw to East Preston and a loss at home to Godalming.

Wick’s danger man is David Crouch, who has scored 16 goals in 33 appearances this season, we will need to be on top form to stop the league’s third top goalscorer, especially a week after stopping the league’s second top goal scorer in Selsey’s Shane Brazil. But we can’t overlook the danger Zach Harris poses with only three fewer goals than Crouch in only 18 appearances.

Epsom v Wick

We have faced Wick twice this season, with the same outcome. An emphatic 6-1 win at Fetcham Grove in September which we followed up with a 0-2 win away at Crabtree Park in November.

But form and past meetings mean nothing in a final, it will come down to performances on the day.
