1-3

Our opponents Worthing United had been well beaten by us earlier in the season 3-0 and we were somewhat expecting the same as we have been in good form – oh how football can bite you when you are not on top of your game. After opening the scoring we fell to our first home league defeat of the season to our opponents 3-1. This was in front of our highest gate of the season of 117; long may that continue.

In truth before we opened the scoring through returning talisman Jamie Byatt, we could have been behind with Worthing Utd spurning two gilt-edged opportunities. Our opening goal was made by Athan Smith-`Joseph who terrorised the Worthing right back all afternoon and his precise cutback was met by Byatt to slot home to make it 1-0. Then we started to not play and let Worthing Utd back into the game with a sloppy piece of defending. The first half ended 1-1.

At half-time, Aaron Bogle was replaced by Jonny Akoto and Gideon Acheampong slotted into central defence. We began to press again with most of the danger coming down the left channel with Athan mesmerising the full-back and then against the run of play a Worthing attack which should have been closed down ended up with the ball being turned into our net by one of our players. The Worthing 3rd goal followed shortly afterwards after a defensive mix up and we then had a ‘mountain to climb. This mountain got rather larger when Steve Springett was sent off so we were down to 10 men. Parity was restored in playing numbers when the aforementioned right back for Worthing Utd was sent off for a second bookable offence, the game ended 3-1 for our visitors.

The team need your support more than ever so let’s get behind them as we strive to end the year on a high note.
